Current for Hair Loss

The current products for the treatment of hair loss are oral  (also known as Proscar and Propecia) and topical Minoxidil (also known as Rogaine), the latter was originally developed as a medicine for hypertension.

Minoxidil is thought that can stimulate hair growth by increasing the flow of blood cells follicular dermal papilla, which play an important role in controlling the hair growth cycle and production.

Both Finasteride and Minoxidil are known for their negative side effects which may include increased heart rate, shortness of breath, rapid weight gain, edema, seborrheic dermatitis, itching of the scalp and scaling.

The aim of research on peppermint oil (discussed below) has been to test its effect on promoting hair growth without side effects.

Peppermint Oil for Hair Growth: Research

A Korean study published in Toxicological Research journal in December 2014 investigated the effect of peppermint oil on hair growth in mice. ( 2 )

Mice were depilated and divided into 4 groups to receive different treatments based on topical applications: saline solution, , 3% minoxidil and 3% peppermint oil.

Each compound was applied topically to the depilated area once a day, 6 days a week, for 4 weeks.

During the 4-week study, the mice were evaluated in terms of hair growth, as well as with other parameters.

Of the 4 groups tested, the mint essential oil group showed the most notable effects of hair growth, a significant increase in skin thickness, number of follicles and depth of follicle.

The study found that as of the second week, hair growth due to peppermint oil was faster than saline and jojoba oil.

In the third week, hair growth due to peppermint essential oil was even more remarkable than in saline or jojoba oil and even higher than Minoxidil.

In the fourth week, peppermint oil achieved a hair growth at around 92%, while the Minoxidil was 55%.

The researchers also found that depth, size as well as number of hair follicles had also increased markedly on skin treated with peppermint essential oil.

The researchers concluded that the results clearly demonstrate that the topical use of peppermint oil is able to significantly stimulate the growth of hair on the skin of mice and therefore could be used as an alternative therapeutic or preventive hair loss In humans.
